Exercises
1. Generate a map showing all or the largest subarea of your service area. Save it to a Word document, label it and provide the source.
2. Generate a table of population and ethnicity/race for your Service Area (or largest subunit) in Word.
Format the table, Add table title and source.
3. Determine the # of children under 5 in poverty in your Service Area.
What year and data source did you use?
4. Are the number of eligible children increasing or decreasing in your Service Area (or the largest part of it if it is too many different units? identify at least two other, different sources of online data that supports your assessment. (birth rate, # of tanf or medi-cal children < 5; free lunch program increases, other indicators.
OR
From factfinder.census.gov, generate a thematic map of your service area, showing the # of children under 5 by census tract. Save it to your disk or email it to yourself, with instruction on how to create it.
5. How many other licensed child care centers are there in your Service Area (or largest subunit)?

Choose Census Factfinder, Dataplace.org or Fairdata2000.com Explore different features. Identify one new feature that you think will be useful to your Head Start agency and share it with the rest of us!!
